How Does a Lock Work?
To understand how rekeying works, it’s helpful to understand how a lock works. Most standard pin and tumbler door locks work with a series of pins in the cylinder plug. These pins, consisting of driving pins and key pins, are all different sizes in the plug to match its key.
You should then be able to insert the key, which will push the pins above the shear line, clearing the plug. Once the pins have been cleared from the cylinder plug, the door can be unlocked.
How Does a Locksmith Rekey a Lock?
Our locksmiths rekey a lock by first removing the door knob or handle. The holes in the cylinder need to be aligned, either by turning the knob counter-clockwise or inserting the key and turning it a quarter turn. Then the locksmith uses a remover tool to remove the door knob from the shank.
Next, they push the cylinder plug out from the door lock, leaving the plug follower in the housing to hold the key pins, driver pins and springs. The C-clip holding the cylinder is removed, followed by the old pins. Then they insert the new key to be used in the lock.
With the new key in the lock, the locksmith will insert new pins flush to the cylinder plug. The new pins will be of a different length, and the teeth on the new keys will match the new pins. This procedure will make the key plug compatible with the new key.
Once the pins in the key plug have been adjusted, the rekeyed lock is refitted into the door. The new lock now works with the new key cut by your The Locksmith Cardiff locksmith.
